Women in Aerospace Engineering

“Women can and should explore all options even in male-dominated industries, and you will succeed in your career if you stay steadfast in your passion and strive to achieve your full potential.”

- Zhang Tian, Senior Engineer, Avionics

Read on as Zhang Tian, our Senior Engineer for Avionics, shares her experiences on passenger-to-freighter conversions and more.

Q: What is a day in your life like?

In my area of work, I am like a conduit for any engineering issues between production engineers and customers. This requires me to have a good understanding of the engineering and maintenance operations related to any aircraft. I am currently supporting our production engineers on major projects such as the B767 Boeing Converted Freighter and cabin modifications.

Q: What do you enjoy most working in ST Engineering?

Many people I meet are surprised to hear that I enjoy working with the electrical system and wiring! I find immense joy in troubleshooting the wiring schematic of the system whenever there is an issue with the aircraft, as it seems like navigating our way in a challenging maze.

What motivates me in my career here is the working environment and the camaraderie I’ve built with my colleagues and the different teams over the years. The collaborative spirit demonstrated by everyone whenever we work towards an aircraft redelivery, always heartens me.

Q: Wow, it is rare to see women engineers in aerospace! What advice do you have for women engineers who are interested in a career with ST Engineering?

Women can and should explore all options even in male-dominated industries, and you will succeed in your career if you stay steadfast in your passion and strive to achieve your full potential. A good way is to experience a career here through an internship with us and familiarise yourself with the business, culture and people.

We have proven solutions for practically every stage of an aircraft life cycle and we are the world’s largest airframe MRO solution provider. As an OEM, we specialise in engine nacelle and composite panels. In Commercial Aerospace, opportunities are aplenty across our various lines of businesses!

Q: Can you share some of the most interesting projects you have worked on?

We recently converted a passenger B767 aircraft to a freighter aircraft and I was working on the avionic and system portions, providing technical liaison on engineering issues between production and Boeing.

This project has left the greatest impression on me because it was demanding and we required a colossal engineering effort as the entire aircraft system had to be re-modified to suit the needs of a freighter. Despite the hurdles we faced, the experience was humbling. Through working together with a group of License Aircraft Engineers (LAEs) and technicians, I have gained much knowledge and project management skills.
